MACRO: Kalanchoe Flowers

Kalanchoe (WiKi) also written Kalanchöe or Kalanchoë, is a genus of about 125 species of tropical, succulent flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, mainly native to the Old World. Only one species of this genus originates from the Americas, 56 from southern and eastern Africa and 60 species in Madagascar. It is also found in south-eastern Asia until China.

Black & White Focus Stacked Image

For my macro (WiKi) photography and because of the limited depth of field (what is in focus) usually associated with macro images I need an application that will extend said field of focus.

Therefor I am currently testing a commercial package, two applications, Helicon Focus and Helicon Remote from HeliSoft. Together this software will allow for focus stacking (WiKi) and tethered camera control. Where Helicon Remote will automate the gathering of all the images (shot at varying focus points) needed for Helicon Focus to do it's focus stacking.

Software:
Test result:
  • Camera: Nikon D90
  • Lens Focal Length: 105mm (Full-frame or 35mm equiv: 158mm)
  • Image Stack: 9 images and each with a manual exposure of 0.5 sec, f/5.6, ISO 200
  • Image: Black and White, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H9.png

Cactus, The Money Shot ~ Magnification 1:1
Nikon D90 and 105mm Micro ~ Magnification 1:1 ~ Shutter: 1sec ~ f/57 ~ ISO: 200

'The Money Shot' was shot at f/57 the maximum f-stop at 1:1 for this lens therefor some detail (sharpness) would certainly be lost due to Lens Diffraction. This sample would indeed have been a little sharper if shot with a wider aperture. However for these first samples I wanted show this lenses best depth-of-field.

A New MACRO Lens

The Dream

From the time I first got into photography back in my day of analog (film) there was one lens I craved and this was a great MACRO but for one reason or another it was a lens I never got around to buying. And four years passed since buying my first DSLR (Nikon D90, which was my fourth digital camera) I was still wishing for a great MACRO lens. A prime macro/telephoto lens to compliment my swiss army knife lens, my Nikkor 16-85mm 1:3.5-5.6 DX.

I'm happy and exited to say today is the red letter day (WiKi) I had dreamt about for all the years past. I've purchased the following, my "dream" glass, a prime telephoto, a true 1:1 MACRO Lens which comes highly praised by pro reviews and user reviewers alike.
