What's in the box

In the BOX: Moving clockwise the box contained a 2.4ghz Flight Controller, the Gintrude H7 (nano) QUAD-Copter, set of four spare propellers, USB Charging Cable and the instructions which had text so bloody small I almost needed a magnifying glass just to read!

Gintrude H7 (nano) QUAD-Copter

Up close and personal. This is a 'Nano' QUAD which means it is quite small. In fact it is so small the bird might qualify as the smallest QUAD-Copter on the market (Google).

First Flight
... was GOOD fun.

I have finished my first flight with the NEW Quad and yes, there will be the customary leaning curve to become a proficient flyer. This little QUAD is NOT like it's more expensive and larger brethren insofar as it's NOT an autonomous ($1000.00+) QUAD-Copter. Within the Gintrude H7 there are NO electronic "smarts" such as GPS to keep the bird stable and in position without any controller input.

Even after proper 'trim' setup you pretty much have to be on the sticks all the time due to left/right and forward/back drifting. In short YOU have to actually FLY this QUAD ... but that's NOT a BAD thing, I like to fly and is the reason why I love the hobby. It's all in a name "RC-Flight, the ART of flying."

Towards becoming a proficient flyer with the H7 Quad "Practice makes perfect." Actually to be more accurate better to say "Perfect practice makes perfect (Google)"...

3D Project: RC Heliopters

Free-viewing 3D

To view this type of 3D image typically 3D glasses (Stereoscope) are preferred but it might surprise one to know we can also view them in 3D without special hardware simply by crossing our eyes.

Viewing oh natural ...
  1. It might help to click on the above image to view it larger and without any distractions.
  2. View the image at a comfortable distance
  3. Gently cross your eyes until you see four images instead of two
  4. Now relax the view so the images come together into three images
  5. Concentrate on the middle image and try to lock in the 3D view.
  6. When you do see the image in 3D (it takes practice) you should be able to move your view looking at the details.
Additional tips and hints.

Practice viewing with 3D samples

The Bell UH-1 Project is Alive and Kicking Butt

For quite sometime my scale UH-1 had been on the back burner for near 5 months, maybe more, probably more. The reason for this long hiatus was in part due to lack of funds to buy a suitable 3-Axis Gyro this helicopter desperately needed for a successful and stable flight. Finding the funding certainly was the issue but generally speaking this type of hardware can be quite expensive. Also 'safety' being an important concern if not the most important thus it was in my best interest to buy electronics that are not only well made but I was also looking for equipment that was well respected with a proven track record.

The Fly by Wire (Wiki) ...

My long absence, my self imposed RC drought finally over I'm bringing my Huey back into the limelight with the purchase of a new 'used' Mikado Mini V-Bar, a Virtual Flybar System. I'm expecting it's delivery within the next few weeks.

Upon receiving my Mini V-Bar I will document it's installation, the mechanical, electronic setup and the maiden (test) flight of my Vietnam War era helicopter, my Bell UH-1 'HUEY' Medivac.

LSD-NiMH Rechargeable Batteries

Low Self Discharge (LSD) are an improved type of NiMH rechargeable battery introduced in 2005 and are the only type of battery I will use. Here's why, given the self discharge rate of conventional NiMH Batteries (let's call them old tech) being unacceptable I've found the following brands will meet my needs. Therefor needing batteries that are ready to go at a moments notice I found on average LSDs will have a longer shelf life as they will retain most of their stored capacity by year end giving approximately 1500 re-charge cycles or more. The 'eneloop' brand are claimed to hold their charge for 5 years with 1,800 cycles. LSD rechargables are also available in Triple-A (AAA) sizes.

According to a battery tutorial from photo tuts+ "Conventional NiMH batteries at the approximate capacity loss of 10% after the first 24hrs and 1% per day after will loose just over ½ of their capacity by month's end." This is why Conventional NiMH rechargeable batteries are unsuitable for powering clocks, TV remotes or any device where it's batteries are expected to last a long time. Conventional (old tech) NiMH rechargeable batteries simply self-drain too fast.

Quote: Low Self Discharge (Wikipedia) NiMH are "a new type of nickel–metal hydride cell (the low self-discharge nickel-metal hydride battery, LSD NiMH) was introduced in 2005 that reduces self-discharge and therefore lengthens shelf life. By using an improved electrode separator and improved positive electrode, manufacturers claim the cells retain 70% to 85% of their capacity after one year when stored at 20 °C (68 °F). These cells are marketed as "hybrid", "ready-to-use" or "pre-charged" rechargeables. Standard NiMH batteries may lose half their charge in the same time period. Retention of charge depends a lot on the battery's impedance or internal resistance (the lower the better), and on the size of the battery as well as the mAh rating. Besides the longer shelf life, they are otherwise similar to traditional NiMH batteries of equivalent capacity and can be charged in typical NiMH chargers"

ALIGN Trex 450, Modified

'Modified' mean's this helicopter had so many 'third party' upgrades there is hardly any parts left that are made by ALIGN themselves. This heli had so many upgrades I can't call this bird an ALIGN?

Scale Helicopter, the Bell UH-1 Huey

HeliArtist - BELL UH1 Huey

Ready for the first TEST Flight but unfortunately this test didn't go to plan. I found the bird needed a 3-Axis GYRO for stabilization. Current status: A work in progress until the electronic stabilization is purchased. An alternate option would be to install the Trex 450 Main Rotor with it's Fly-bar stabilization.

Tail Riser Assembly
: Plastic Idler pulleys needed replacing with a metal (CNC) pulley. Plastic pulleys as supplied are known to wear tail drive belts prematurely therefor the preemptive pulley replacement as shown in the next image.
